Karon Wright: Middle School Counselor and Certified Educator
Karon Wright is a middle school counselor who got her start as a science teacher; she works in Grand Prairie, Texas. While other counselors may only focus on scheduling issues, Karon takes her work seriously and understands that she is able to play an important role in the lives of her students. Karon makes it a point to understand the emotional and social issues that impact her pupils. She understands that adolescence is a turbulent time, and she offers guidance to students that are dealing with drug abuse, pregnancy, bullying, and peer pressure.
Middle school is an exciting, yet challenging time for students, their parents and teachers. During this passage from childhood to adolescence, middle school students are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests, connecting their learning in the classroom to its practical application in life and work; high levels of activity coupled with frequent fatigue due to rapid growth; a search for their own unique identity as they begin turning more frequently to peers rather than parents for ideas and affirmation; extreme sensitivity to the comments from others; and heavy reliance on friends to provide comfort, understanding and approval.
Unfortunately many students must come face to face with dilemmas relating to these subjects, particularly as they age. Karon’s goal is to make it easier for them to cope with these tough situations, while living a healthy and productive life. Since she works directly with middle school pupils, she understands that these young men and women are at a vulnerable age. Due to stress, boredom, and curiosity, these young people may fall victim to destructive behaviors like promiscuity, drug use, self-abuse, and self-mutilation. Her goal is to support both parents and students. She hopes that her advice will help her pupils to steer clear of destructive behaviors. Her guidance proves useful to parents who are hoping to help their kids get through adolescence, but feel uncertain about how they can help.
